In addition to connecting commodities and people in the U.S., the Great Lakes – St. Lawrence Seaway system provides a doorway to the world. About one in every four ships using the Great Lakes is a saltie, a ship carrying finished goods and bulk commodities over the ocean. Many boats carry cargo both ways, for example bringing finished goods in from Europe and Scandinavia and sending bulk commodities out to the Middle East and Africa.
