From Field and Mine to Market

A bowl of wheat does not a breakfast make. Neither can we get a ride to school on a ton of iron ore. The bulk commodities (tons of wheat, tons of iron ore, tons of coal) must be transported to the sites where they are converted to the finished products that we find in grocery stores, auto dealerships and the electrical outlet in our living room.

Maritime shipping, that is transport by boat, provides an efficient and effective means of getting bulk commodities to the market. Over the years, companies have located their factories and manufacturing plants near sources of raw materials or ports to which they can be delivered economically.
