Water Quality - Pollutant Sources and Impacts

The addition of nutrients to surface waters has the effect of stimulating biological activity. While some fertilization may have positive effects (e.g. better fishing), too much leads to water quality problems. Nutrients fall into two categories, inorganic chemicals such as nitrogen and phosphorus which stimulate plant growth and organic matter which stimulates bacterial growth.
