Michigan Environmental Education Curriculum
Groundwater Contamination

The plumes on the previous pages were simple ones based on theory. Rarely do plumes look so nice and even. On the right is an animation that shows a real life contamination plume. When you click "play", the plume will change with time. The different colors represent different concentrations of chemicals, with red being the highest.

Watch the animation and see if you can answer these questions:

  1. Where is the source of the contamination?
  2. Is the source continuous or a one-time event?
  3. Based on the direction of the plume, which way is the groundwater moving?
  4. How far does the contamination travel in 16 years?
  5. What important areas of the city are affected by the contamination?
