We get water from aquifers through the use of
wells. If
a well is drilled in the right location in an artesian aquifer,
the pressure will cause it to flow on its own.
In the picture to the left, the well on the right side flows on
its own, while the well on the left side does not.
Usually, mechanical energy must be used to extract the ground
water, as with the hand pump shown here. Most modern wells
use another energy source to pump the water, such as electricity.
