The Great Lakes Ecosystem

The producers take energy from the sun and nutrients from the water and convert them into food. In the Great Lakes the largest number of producers are referred to as phytoplankton, which means free floating algae. Phytoplankton can survive as long as they are close to the water's surface and have the proper nutrients. They tend to bloom in the spring when the water is warming up and the most nutrients are available.
