The Dwarf Lake
Iris is found almost exclusively on the
shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. It
is listed among the Threatened Species in the State of Michigan and
by the Federal Government. This beautiful flower usually grows
beneath cedar trees in thick patches near the backdune. It produces
a few seeds which are dispersed by ants.
The Lake Iris is losing habitat
because of ORV's, road construction, and building construction.
It is also threatened by picking and by recreational activities
of humans. The Dwarf Lake Iris is Michigan's State Wild
Flower.
