What Types of Forest Ecosystems Are Found in Michigan?

There are many types of forest ecosystems in Michigan. When there is a combination of certain trees, shrubs, animals, and other organisms living together in a common habitat, that habitat is referred to as a type of forest.

In this module, you will look at four major forest ecosystems in Michigan:

  1. Jack Pine Ecosystem - occurs within the Pine Community

  2. Boreal Ecosystem - occurs on the island of Isle Royale

  3. Oak-Hickory Ecosystem - occurs in the southern part of the Lower Peninsula

  4. Northern Hardwoods Ecosystem - occurs in the northern part of the Lower Peninsula and all over in the Upper Peninsula
