Wetland Ecosystems

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, terrestrial ecosystems must have 3 characteristics to be considered a wetland:

  1. water at or near the surface for a period of time each year

  2. hydric soil - soil that is wet all or most of the year

  3. hydrophytic plants - plants that are adapted to wet soil

Think about the squishy land at the edge of a pond, or those forests where the ground is soaked with water - these are wetlands!
