Where Does Our Garbage Go?

You need to have both nitrogen and carbon materials.  Using twice as much carbon as nitrogen will work best.  Remember: the smaller your materials, the better and faster your compost will work.

Carbon (Brown)

  • leaves
  • twigs (chip large wood)
  • pine needles
  • newspaper scraps (shredded)
  • lint
  • wood ash
  • sawdust
  • straw

leaves

Nitrogen (Green)

  • grass clippings
  • lettuce
  • fruit and vegetable peelings
  • spent flowers
  • coffee grounds
  • most kitchen scraps (see list of don'ts)

apple

Things NOT to add: cheese

  • meat scraps
  • bones
  • dairy products (cheese, milk, etc.)
  • oily foods
  • salty foods
  • pet feces
  • diseased plants

fish bones

These could attract rodents and other pests to your compost pile!
