Where Does Our Garbage Go?

paper

Paper is the largest component of the average American's waste stream.  You can reduce your paper waste by using both sides of the page and using scrap paper when possible.  Use the backs of used paper for notes, drawings, or scratch paper!

Look around the cafeteria - I'll bet you see a lot of waste being created there!  You can reduce your lunch waste by buying snacks in large bags and putting them into small, reusable containers.  The small bags cost up to 30% more and create over 10 times as much garbage!

Reducing your waste should be your first step in trying to be more environmentally-friendly!  How can you reduce waste?  How can you reuse products?

Here are just a few ideas for reducing and reusing at school.  Can you think of any more?

book

Your local and school libraries probably has lots of books, CDs, and movies that you can use instead of buying your own!   You can also share magazines, catalogs, books, or movies with family and friends.

Try using a reusable lunch box or bag instead of disposable paper bags. Using reusable food containers will reduce your trash and also keep your food from getting squashed.
