All human beings place stress on the earth’s ecological and biophysical systems because we use energy and other resources to meet our basic needs and improve our material standard of living. Modifying energy and product choices and using pollution prevention strategies to minimize the stress on the earth’s resources is a first step toward developing a more sustainable lifestyle. In this module, we will examine sustainability from three perspectives:
-
The individual and the concept of the ecological footprint.
-
The community and sustainability in the Great Lakes watershed.
-
Global sustainability and the UN Millennium Development Goals.
