By 2025, two thirds of the world's population is likely to
live in countries with moderate or sever water shortages. Fierce national
competition over water resources has prompted fears that water issues contain
the seeds of violent conflict. But the water problems facing our world
need not be only a cause of tension; they can also be a catalyst for cooperation.
--Kofi Annan, UN Secretary-General, World Water Day, 2002

To address the potential for conflict and cooperation on
water issues, Michigan Technological University has launched the Michigan
Tech Water Initiative. The purpose of the Michigan Tech Water Initiative
program is to provide the multidisciplinary perspectives and tools to
manage water-related problems of local, regional, and international interest.
The Michigan Tech Water Initiative has three primary foci: undergraduate
and graduate education, technical and policy-related research, and community
outreach. The Michigan Tech Water Initiative community consists of any
faculty, students, and staff that have water-related interests.
