Research and Teaching Interests

Dr. Hutzler’s research focuses on the protection and restoration of groundwater resources. He has done work on the mechanisms that affect the fate and transport of organic chemicals in the subsurface and on the use of air sparging and soil vapor extraction to clean groundwater and soil. He has over 40 technical publications pertaining to his research and has made numerous presentations. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Sustainable Futures Institute and has served as its interim co-director. His most recent research focuses on water conservation in large residential building and the use of life cycle analysis and life cycle cost analysis to assess the environmental impacts of water use. Dr. Hutzler is director of the Center for Science and Environmental Outreach, which is devoted to promoting natural resource protection. Among other topics, he teaches a class called “Engineering for the Environment” to design engineers.
