James R. Mihelcic

Research and Teaching Interests

Dr. Mihelcic’s research focuses on chemical/biological transformation and treatment of pollutants in natural and engineered systems; bioavailability of hydrophobic organic chemicals; industrial ecology and sustainability, and application of appropriate sustainable technology in the developing world. He has served as co-principal investigator or project director for more than $5 million in extramural research supported by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, the U.S. National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and many municipalities and industry. He has published over 40 papers in the peer-reviewed scientific and engineering literature and advised over 60 M.S. and Ph.D. students. Dr. Mihelcic teaches courses in environmental engineering, engineering in the developing world, sustainability/industrial ecology, and environmental regulations. He is also active in environmental outreach to secondary schools.
